Tip Eintracht Frankfurt – Rangers

Eintracht Frankfurt and Glasgow Rangers will be contesting for the UEFA Europa League title this season. The two sides face off in Seville, Spain for the chance to win a European competiton. Winning this final takes a team into the group stages of the Champions League. Rangers are already in the qualifying rounds but Eintracht Frankfurt could only finish 11th in the Bundesliga, 10 points behind the Europa Conference League place. Therefore, it’s even win this and get into the Champions League or no European competition in 2022/23. They have only themselves to blame after ending the season with no wins in their last eight league games.

Frankfurt have had more success in Europe though. They have a good history with a European Cup final appearance in 1960. Ok they lost 7-3 to Real Madrid but at least they got there. 1980 saw them win the Europa League and in 2019 lost to Chelsea on penalties in the semi-finals of this competition. This season has gone well for them and they won their group by three points from Olympiakos with no defeats, though three of their six games were drawn. That took them into the last 16 where they beat Real Betis 3-2 on aggregate. They won the away first leg 2-1 but lost 1-0 at home. That took the tie into extra time and Frankfurt got through via a 121st minute own goal. The quarter finals saw Frankfurt cause a massive shock as they knocked out Barcelona. The home first leg was drawn 1-1 but Frankfurt went 3-0 up in the second leg and held on for a 3-2 win. The semi-finals saw them win both legs against West Ham United to reach the final. Nine of their last ten games in this competition have seen both teams score.

Rangers are in their first European final since 2008. They finished second in the Scottish Premiership this season but would love to win the Europa League. It’d be great for Scottish football and mean they have two teams in the Champions League group stages next season. Rangers began this season in that competition but were beaten in the qualifying rounds by Malmo. They qualified for the Europa League group stages and finished second behind Lyon. In the last 32, they caused a massive surprise by knocking out Borussia Dortmund. They led 3-0 in the away first leg, eventually winning 4-2. A 2-2 home draw in the second leg saw them eliminate the Germans. The last 16 started well with a 3-0 home win at Ibrox over Red Star Belgrade and despite losing the away second leg 2-1, they were in the last eight. They also lost the away leg in the quarter finals, being beaten 1-0 by Braga but fought back to beat them at home 3-1 after extra time. In the semi-finals they were up against Leipzig and it was more of the same. The away leg was lost 1-0 but they won 3-1 at Ibrox to make it to the final.

The Form of the Finalists

Frankfurt : D-D-W-D-W  (most recent result first)

Rangers:   W-W-W-W-D

The above results include all competitions. Frankfurt’s two wins both came over West Ham in the Europa League semi-finals. Form often goes out of the window in cup finals but recent stats show Frankfurt able to score goals but struggling to keep clean sheets with only one in the last ten matches. Rangers have had success but couldn’t catch Celtic. Aside from the win in Dortmund, they do tend to struggle on their travels. The win in Germany is their only away win in the Europa League in their last nine matches. Seven of their last nine games in all competitions have seen both teams get on the scoresheet.

ConclusionEINTRACHT FRANKFURT – RANGERS

These two stand out as the best sides in this season’s Europa League and while they’ve had contrasting fortunes in their domestic leagues, in Europe they’ve done well. Frankfurt have however been better. They are unbeaten in their last 12 Europa League matches and right before this, they eliminated West Ham United. Rangers do not have that run in Europa League and have literally scraped through to the final. In their scoring form though they may feel they can challenge here. Back both teams to score but Frankfurt win.
