Leipzig welcomes Rangers to the Red Bull Arena in this Europa League semi-final first leg match. The home team had an excellent 3-1 aggregate win over Atalanta in their quarter final tie while the visitors came through 3-2 on aggregate against Braga but needed an extra time goal to win the tie. Leipzig are currently in fourth position in the Bundesliga but would dearly love to win this competition and gain automatic entry into next seasons Champions League. They lost their last home match 2-1 to Union Berlin which ended an eleven match unbeaten run at home. This will be the first meeting between theses sides in Europe. The last time teams met in a European competition semi- final as their first meeting also involved Leipzig when they played PSG in the 2019/20 Champions League. Leipzig have reached their second semi-final in Europe yet they are only playing in European competitions in the last five years.

Rangers are having a stellar season as they are in the running for three potential titles. They are second in the Scottish Premier League and are in the Scottish Cup final. Their hopes in this competition will hinge on how well they do in the first leg. Rangers come into this match on the back of four consecutive victories across all competitions. Their away record shows just one defeat in their last five matches. Rangers have won just two of their 24 away matches against German opposition in European competition however they beat Dortmund on their last visit to Germany. Rangers have reached the semi-final stage of a European competition for the seventh time but for the first time since the 2007/08 season where they lost in the final to Zenit St. Petersburg.
