Tip Sunderland – Wycombe Wanderers

Sunderland and Wycombe Wanderers are angling for the remaining Championship slot and will be playing out for it in the League One promotion playoff at Wembley on Saturday. In the regular season, these two were separated by just a point; Sunderland finishing fifth with 84 points and Wycombe sixth on 83. All that will count for little as they face off in this important game. Sunderland are here courtesy of a 2-1 aggregate win over Sheffield Wednesday, another side that was seeking a straight return to the Championship. Patrick Roberts’ 90th minute goal in the return leg at Sheffield Wednesday made all the difference but Ross Stewart’s only goal in the first leg had set Sunderland on course. Stewart’s goal was his third in the last five matches and here he will be a man in focus, having scored four against Wycombe in the regular season. Sunderland are unbeaten in their last 15 matches too, and will be very confident heading into this game.

Wycombe are coming from a 1-0 loss to MK Dons in the return leg of their playoff semifinal. The fact that they’d won 2-0 in the opening leg made it easy for Wycombe but here they should expect a tough outing. First of all, they have no win in the last three meetings with Sunderland, and in each of these matches, they’ve conceded three or more goals. In the last six meetings between these two, each one of them has managed one clean sheet only. Wycombe’s loss to MK Dons was their first in 14 matches and they will also view this as a winnable game, coming into it in good form. They will however be worried with Ross Stewart’s scoring form, especially considering that in the last 10 away matches, they have just one clean sheet. They’ve failed to score in two of the last 10 matches though, which is something to build on as they go into this game.

ConclusionSUNDERLAND – WYCOMBE WANDERERS

Sunderland have the chance to end their four-year stay in the third tier, while Wycombe have a chance to make an immediate return to the second tier. The two sides go into this game on the back of impressive runs, but it is Sunderland who have the edge. The Saints have no loss in 15 matches, but one key man in focus will be Ross Stewart, who scored four times in the two earlier meetings between these two sides and is on a good run going into this game. We are backing him to score here too.
